What You Should Look for in a Camping Knife

A senior district attorney in Brooklyn, New York, Justin Marrus has tried more than 15 cases to verdict since 2011, during which time he has interviewed thousands of criminal defendants, civilian witnesses, and law enforcement personnel. Beyond his professional pursuits, Justin Marrus enjoys blacksmithing. One of his favorite things to make are camping knives.

A good multi-purpose camping knife should be equally as effective dicing potatoes and slicing tomatoes as it is in gutting and cleaning a fish and cutting rope. With that in mind, an ideal camping knife should have a blade that is at least four to six inches long. This rules out pocket knives as an option. It should also be designed in accordance with the activities you plan on doing.

For instance, cutting thick rope requires a sturdy blade, whereas the optimal knife for filleting a fish should have a flexible blade. Generally speaking, the latter is the more common function of a camping knife.

Another important aspect to consider is the angle of the knife's blade. A 10-17 degree edge is preferred for filleting a fish or slicing meat but requires frequent resharpening. Most hunting and survival knives have a more blunt edge at 23-30 degrees but are more durable and longer-lasting than the aforementioned 10-17 degree edge.
